What is a quartz plate? what is it used for?

March 30, 2023

To understand quartz sheets, you first need to understand what is quartz? To put it simply, quartz is an inorganic mineral whose main component is silicon dioxide, which is milky white and has a particularly hard texture. It is widely used for its stable physical and chemical properties.

What is that quartz plate? Quartz sheet and quartz have an inseparable relationship. Quartz sheet is usually smelted and cut from quartz. Its silicon dioxide content can reach more than 99.999%. It has a hardness of seven on the Mohs scale and has high temperature resistance and good insulation performance. The property of low thermal expansion coefficient perfectly inherits the physical and chemical properties of quartz. Generally, it is colorless and transparent, with a high light transmittance of more than 85%. Therefore, quartz sheets are often used to make optical glass to assist people in working in poor optical environments.

What are quartz plates used for?

Use 1: Optical glass/instrument. The optical performance of the quartz plate is very characteristic, it can penetrate the far ultraviolet, and can also pass through the visible and near-infrared spectrum. The material of the quartz sheet is high-quality, not only resistant to high temperature and stable in chemical properties, but also possesses some characteristics of optical glass, such as air bubbles and birefringence. If the optical environment in the working environment is unstable, or optical glass is needed for assistance, quartz plate is a good auxiliary optical material.

Use two: chemical instruments. Chemical instruments have very strong requirements on the high temperature resistance of materials, and quartz plates perfectly meet the requirements of chemical instruments for high temperature resistance and corrosion resistance. The physical performance of the quartz plate is also very outstanding, very high temperature resistance, the temperature of the melting point can reach 1730 ℃, and it can be used for a long time in the environment of 1100 ℃. Secondly, the quartz plate is corrosion resistant. Compared with the corrosion resistance of ceramics and stainless steel, the acid resistance of the quartz plate is more than 30 times that of them. For stainless steel, the acid resistance of the quartz plate is 150 times that of it. In addition, the quartz plate is resistant to high temperatures, but its thermal stability is also very good, and drastic temperature changes have little effect on it. Even after a high temperature of 1100 ℃ and placed in room temperature, the quartz plate will not burst, which is why many chemical instruments are made of quartz plates.

Of course, the application of quartz sheet is not limited to the above two points, and its application is very extensive. It is widely used in semiconductor, medical equipment, chemical industry, metallurgy and national defense.
